This is not your typical romantic suspense. Oh, it is not so. It will be awkward, taught, will keep guessing to the end.
Carson Tenor's hero was suffering from a personal tragedy of great proportion 15 years ago. This case became an attorney with a decisive and very successful assistant district. Lawyers are that the main ambition in life defends bad guys. He divides people into two categories. Good and bad with no gray shading. That is until he meets Anne Baxter, a complete and perfect anti-heroine. I have to give Webb's props to figure this character. I absolutely can not believe how to turn this story into a romantic suspense (emphasizing romantic things). Our heroine is definitely in the category of bad people.
Our heroine Ann turned things to power up in political and social circles despite having a very rough life. She did not enter this world by inherited right, or diligence. She did it by some of the most evil ways possible. In fact, she is evil like a politician who runs the city. But she is set up. She knows it and decides the strike first. That is where Carson comes. Mr. "Following the law" deeply finds a conspiracy threatening not only his existence but also the fabric of what he has possessed over the past 15 years. Born between Carson and Anne, the fact that there is sexual and rough tension is something that can be expected based on the fact that they are completely opposite. However, the author raised it to the next level and the reader is actually fostering sympathy for Ann and what she had to do to do it in the world. No apology, the author do not try to coat sugar. Once again, this world has many gray shades.
One of the key plot points is that all humans have broken eyes. We use a complex series of crosses and double crosses to find break points of letters.
Webb knows how to create conspiracy well and draws you with good explanatory dialogue and taught suspense. She develops complex layers in relation to characters, and slowly releases its mystery.
Like you, if you like conspiracy theory, this is a difficult book to put.
